Troy Osborn

LAYTON – Like most boys his age, Troy Osborn was obsessed with sports growing up in Farmington.  During his formative years in the late 80’s and early 90’s the rise of sports fan gift shops like Pro Image Sports allowed fans for the first time to get officially licensed shirts and hats of their favorite players and teams.

For a sports crazed kid like Osborn, Pro Image Sports was a second home, where he spent every penny earned.  He built an ensemble of University of Utah shirts, Michael Jordan posters, and snapback hats like the Fab Five at the University of Michigan wore.

More than twenty years later not much has changed.  Osborn can be found wearing his favorite Utah shirt and snapback hat, except for one small difference; he owns the store he loved all those years ago.

Troy recently opened his dream store in Layton Hills Mall, the first full-blown Pro Image Sports in the Wasatch Front in over 15 years.

“Sports has always been my passion, and I’ve always wanted to open my own business,” said Osborn.

There has been extraordinary excitement generated by the return of Pro Image Sports, resulting in the largest sales of any new store opening of the past 10 years.  Pro Image Sports, whose corporate offices are still in Centerville, was a franchise born in ZCMI center over 25 years ago that has near 100 stores nationwide.  The franchisee locally during the early 90’s was the Larry H. Miller group, who later split off and renamed themselves Fanzz.

Osborn’s passion for sports influenced his career choices from an early age, as he began working at Scoreboard Sports, before taking a job at Fanzz after graduating from Weber State University.  His love for the product, and great work ethic helped him rise in the ranks at Fanzz where he worked for the corporate office for over 10 years before jumping at the opportunity to be his own boss.

Visit his store in Layton and you will find him happily helping customers, often times with the aid of some underage employees, his seven-year old son Tyler and five-year old daughter Camryn.

They love the store almost as much as the early customers have.  His unique mix of rare headwear and novelty items has left the most seasoned sports fan astonished.  A recent tourist from the east coast mentioned the hat selection was the most impressive he’d seen outside of New York City.

“Utah customers are avid and diverse,” said Osborn.  “We have a great selection of teams and items, and are able to give customers a lot of options they haven’t had.”

For Osborn, his life has come full circle, as the dream of a boy has developed into the business reality of a man.
